LA GRANGE, IL – A La Grange building that has been referred to as a “thorn in everyone’s side” may become the site of a restaurant and co-working space.
At its meeting Tuesday, the Plan Commission is set to review the application for Brick and Mortar, 30 S. La Grange Road. It is the site of the old Nicksons Eatery, which closed three years ago.
The village code allows co-working space downtown, but it requires the first-floor frontage to be retail or dining.

In that space, Brick and Mortar plans to lease to BOA Acai, with the BOA standing for “Brazil’s Organic Acai.” The business operates eateries at farmers markets in the suburbs.
The co-working space is set to include 15 single-occupancy offices (work booths), two mid-sized meeting rooms, two conference rooms and three large open spaces for gathering, eating and meeting. A café is also planned for co-working participants.

To use the offices, patrons can purchase hourly or daily passes or memberships. Brick and Mortar also has sites in Deerfield, Park Ridge and Glen Ellyn.
At a Village Board meeting earlier this year, officials described the building in question as a blight on downtown. The matter was in litigation.
At the time, Village President Mark Kuchler said the building was “a problem and a thorn in everyone’s side.”
In spring 2022, the demolition of the building’s interior started without a permit, according to a village memo. A permit was later granted.

In October 2023, the village notified the property owners of a violation involving the building’s exterior. The case was taken to court and settled a month and a half ago, the memo said.
The Plan Commission meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall, 53 S. La Grange Road.
