Italy was deprived another point by Iran in Sassari on the Italian island of Sardinia in World League 2013. “Azzurri” already led 2-0 in order win after 5th set and take the lead in Pool B. Having overcome Germany in tie-break, not only Serbia did overtake the Black Eagles in Standings, but Serbia also saved its chances for the Final 6 participation.

Italy came back from a loss Friday against new FIVB World League competitor, Iran, to win a five-set match 3-2 at home (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13).

Nearly 4,300 fans turned out to watch the match, which pitted the Italians against Iran, who formerly coached Italy’s national women’s and men’s teams.

In the first set, Italy’s Ivan Zaytzev recorded 18 points and learned from Friday’s errors to secure the court. Italy, coached by Mauro Berruto, coped well with the Iranian attack and won the first two sets by scores of (25-22) and (25-20).

Italy fell behind in the third set, and Iran took control of the moment to win the third set (20-25).

In the fourth set, Italy managed to keep a good lead and won the set (18-25).

Italy continued to play harder in the tie-break, with support of the home team fans and finished the match (15-13).

Germany started the match with two excellent blocking kills to take an early (3-1) lead. However, when Atanasijevic stepped up to the service line, Serbia scored six consecutive points to turn the score in their favor (7-3). Through the second technical time-out, the hosts maintained the gap of four points (16-12). After the break, Germany started closing in slowly but surely. At (17-16) coach Kolakovic had to ask for a time-out, which resulted in restoring the four-point lead at (21-17). Then Serbia started to struggle. Germany managed to stop Atanasijevic on couple occasions, and reached the tie at (22-22), and then grabbed the lead (23-22). Kaliberda’s spike sealed the first set at (25-23) for the visitors.

The second set was much more equally balanced. After a couple of initial ties, Germany went up by two points, but Serbia closed it at (12-12).The teams played point-for-point all the way through the second technical break (16-15 to Serbia). After the break, Serbia earned a 3-point lead at (19-16), which was enough for the home side to calmly bring this set to an end at (25-19) and tie the score to 1-1 in sets.

Germany fought back in the beginning of the third set with an early (8-4) lead. After the break, Serbia started to play better, and reached the tie at (11-11), and even took the lead at (12-11). However, it was Germany to lead at the second technical break (16-15). The home side once again found strength to turn the score in their favor at (19-18). The teams battled hard for each and every ball, but at (23-22) for the hosts, excellent triple block by Serbia, followed by Atanasijevic’s killing spike made it (25-22) and 2-1 in sets for the home side.

Serbia started the fourth set better, going up (8-4) before the first technical time-out. After the break, Germany pushed very hard and turned the score upside down, going up by three points at (12-9) and maintaining the steady lead all the way until the very end, forcing a tie-break.

In the tie-break, Serbia got an early two-point lead and successfully maintained the gap until Germany tied the score at (10-10). From that moment on, the crowd could see a great battle between the two teams. Serbia got to the match point first with a wonderful spike by Atanasijevic for (14-12). And it was precisely Atanasijevic who wrapped up the match with another potent spike for (15-12) and 3-2 overall.

Aleksandar Atanasijevic of Serbia topped the scorers chart with 31 points, while Denys Kaliberda scored 20 for the winners.
