Let us pray

‘Mass for Europe’ causes concern.

The Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECO) is marking the Polish government’s six-month presidency of the European Union’s Council of Ministers with a “mass for Europe”, to be held in the Roman Catholic cathedral of SS Michel and Gudule in Brussels on 20 September.

The king and queen of the Belgians, Albert and Paola, have been invited, as well as members of the Council of Ministers and of the European Parliament and European commissioners and directors-general of the European Commission.

But grumbling has reached Entre Nous suggesting that not everyone in the EU institutions is happy about this elision of the secular and the sacred, either because they are avowedly anti-clerical, or because they believe that it is unwise to suggest to the bond markets that the only hope left for the euro is prayer.

Correction: This article originally suggested that the mass was instigated by the Polish government. This was incorrect.
