In a matter of pride for the city, Ludhiana has become the first railway station of the country to get a vertical garden. The joint initiative of the Income Tax department, Ludhiana, and the Indian Railways Ferozepur division, was inaugurated on the occasion of Income Tax Day on Tuesday by chief commissioner of Income Tax (CCIT-Ludhiana) Binay K Jha and divisional railway manager (DRM), Vivek Kumar.
In the initial phase of the project, more than 2,000 waste plastic bottles containing different varieties of plants have been installed on the walls of platform No.1 of the station. All the bottles have been connected with state-of-the-art drip irrigation system, which releases only the required amount of water in the bottles, according to the timing set. According to railway authorities, ever since the installation of the vertical garden, the incidents of spitting pan masala and gutkha on the platform walls have come down significantly.
