COMMACK, NY — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Patch is remembering those lost to cancer and and honoring those who are fighting.

Rachel Antorino, the daughter of Aimee Hinkis Antorino, is remembered through Rachel’s Dance for the Cure, a foundation created in her memory. Aimee discussed Rachel, her cancer battle, and how her fight inspires Rachel’s Dance for the Cure every day.

“Rachel Antorino was a 12-year-old seventh grade student at Commack Middle School in Commack when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia,” Antorino said. “AML is a very aggressive and rare type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes an abnormal amount of blood cells. People started calling her ‘RachelStrong’ because she showed so much strength and courage throughout her 20 months of treatment. She passed away at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on Aug. 30, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Rachel loved life, her family and friends.

“The foundation is dedicated to celebrating the lives of those we’ve lost and supporting those fighting a similar battle with AML,” Antorino said.

The charity’s mission is to help conquer AML by funding research to find a cause and cure for the devastating disease.
