Sharks chief executive officer Eduard Coetzee issued an apology across the board after his team’s lacklustre performance in their 35-0 loss to Cardiff on Sunday.
The weather conditions were difficult, with rain falling and playing right into Cardiff’s hands, who obliged with a stunning performance.
Granted, the Sharks were missing several high-profile stars who were on international duty. However, the team selection was solid and certainly had enough firepower to claim the win.
Still finding their feet
The loss puts further pressure on the Durban side, who have yet to find their feet under their new ownership that has flooded the club with world-class signings.
Coetzee credited Cardiff for their display and apologised widely for the team’s efforts, claiming the side is doing everything they can to steady the ship.
“Cardiff were unbelievable and well-coached,” Coetzee said after the game. “They were clinical, dominated the set pieces, and used their opportunities well.
“But I want to apologise to our fans that came out in their droves in the rain… We had more than 7000 fans on a Sunday in the wet.
“Our fans, our sponsors, our stakeholders, our owners do not deserve a performance such as that one…A lot of people put a lot of effort into this franchise and a display like tonight’s does not reward them for their input.
“Also know that we will not leave it there, we will turn this around we will get back on the horse. This was unlike the Sharks and everything possible will be done to rectify this and it will be done as soon as possible.”
The return of the Springboks
The Sharks’ Springboks contingent returns this week with Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Bongi Mbonambi and Thomas du Toit amongst those returning in what should be a massive boost.
These international stars may not be getting the rest they deserve after a gruelling Test season, as the franchise desperately needs to get some momentum.
The Sharks host the Ospreys this weekend and will look to get back to winning ways and make a charge up the table as the United Rugby Championship enters the bulk of its season.
