NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — An affidavit released by the Middlesex County Prosecutor reveals new details about a New Brunswick camp counselor accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a fellow staffer, who was underage.
The man is Dwany Cruz, 26, a New Brunswick resident who worked as a recreation assistant at a summer program in New Brunswick.

The underage minor is a 16-year-old girl who also worked as a counselor at the summer camp, which is run by the city of New Brunswick.

Cruz is alleged to have had sexual intercourse with her on multiple occasions, said police. He works as the rec director at the camp.
It was the girl’s mother who found text messages “of a sexual nature” between Cruz and the girl, and called police, according to the affidavit.

New Brunswick runs a free weekday summer camp called Play S.A.F.E. (Summer Activities For Everyone) for city children ages 6 to 12; it offers daily supervised camp activities and also a free daily meal through the Federal Summer Food Service Program, MyCentralJersey reported.
Play S.A.F.E. provides free childcare, field trips, sports, arts & crafts and more for the inner-city urban children of New Brunswick, nearly all who come from low-income and/or undocumented homes.
Cruz is charged with third-degree endangering the welfare of a child. He surrendered Thursday to the New Brunswick Police Department. When questioned by police, he immediately asked for his lawyer, according to the affidavit.
