GEORGIA — After a dangerous storm hit Georgia Tuesday, weather officials told Patch a second storm system is heading Georgia’s way Friday.

While constant rain should not be a concern, the severe risk potential for Friday’s storm is higher compared to Tuesday, said Brett Albright, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Peachtree City office.

“It’s just going to be a different event in general,” he said early Thursday.

The rainfall amounts are not forecast to reach Tuesday’s water levels with the rain predicted to be more “sporadic and showery” Friday, Albright said.

Georgia saw tons of flooding Tuesday with one area currently being investigated for a tornado though one was not confirmed as of Thursday.

Central Georgia sat at a “fairly high” Level 3 risk for severe weather Friday, Albright said. A Level 2 risk existed for Metro Atlanta while north Georgia reached a Level 1 risk.

Precipitation is expected to approach the Georgia-Alabama border around 9 a.m. Friday with southwest showers forecast to move northeast across Georgia by the afternoon. The main severe risks are expected between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. as the line of storms arrive from Alabama.

Hazards could include damaging winds, few isolated wind gusts, hail and possible tornadoes, Albright said.

Wind gusts could in the central and northern portions of the state could reach at least 35 mph while gusts could increase locally.

A wind advisory was issued for 10 a.m. Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday for several counties, including those in metro Atlanta due to south winds of 15-25 mph predicted in the area.

“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” the weather service said in the alert.

Albright said a high wind advisory is in place for counties near the north Georgia mountains as wind gusts not associated with the storm Friday should be more than 45 mph, Albright said.

The rain should clear out by Saturday morning though a cold air mass is anticipated to arrive. Albright said multiple areas, including metro Atlanta, could be below freezing.

The eastern region of the U.S., including Georgia, is predicted to see “a good amount of arctic air coming down” in the next few days, he said.

As for Monday, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, more rain is in the forecast. The weather service is monitoring conditions to discover if the rain could end in snow for far north Georgia, Albright said.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens by Wednesday morning across the northern portion of the state, possibly into metro Atlanta.
