FAIRFIELD, CT — Once known as the Broadway Method Academy, the newly named Black Rock Theater at 1935 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield celebrated its recent rebranding with a ribbon-cutting event earlier this week.
While the nonprofit theater has been on Black Rock Turnpike for nearly a decade, not everyone knew that performances were held there, Executive Director Connor Deane told Patch.
The theater, which seats 130, is in the former Eastern Mountain Sports store, and is only a few doors down from a Shop Rite, which contributed to the decision to rebrand itself as Black Rock Theater.

“As the academy, we were also mostly known for doing classes for children,” Deane said. “We still do that, but we’ve also been introducing professional performances and programs in recent years.”
He added, “Hopefully, the name change and rebranding effort will help our efforts to continue to build our audience.”

The theater produces six musicals per year, one in March, one in June, two in July, one in October and one in December. Up next is “Anything Goes,” featuring professional performers, which will run for two weeks and is set to debut on June 17. Tickets start at $35.

“We’re very accessible to New York City talent, which has been great for us,” Deane said.
Among the famous performers who have graced the theater’s stage are Tony Award-winners Cynthia Erivo, Kelli O’Hara, Alice Ripley and Lindsay Mendez, and more than a dozen performers who have appeared in Broadway productions.
In addition to the professional shows, the theater also produces performances with talent from the community and area schools.
Those professional-level training and performance opportunities are for artists of all backgrounds, and includes singing, dancing and acting instruction, in groups or privately.
