Recently sacked former Lille boss Hervé Renard spoke to J + 1 last night about his recent departure from Les Dogues and life within football more broadly. Extracts.

On the next step…

If someone offers me something tomorrow, I am ready. My bags are always ready to go because I have travelled a lot. I have worked in 8 different countries. So I am ready to go. Today I am ready to go anywhere in the world. [My next job] will be abroad. Logic tells me that. I don’t think that with the amount of time I have spent abroad I would be in the best condition to manage in France.

On France…

You know, me I am someone who has travelled a little bit around the world. What I am about to say will shock people but it is very important that I say it. If you are driving down the road in a Bentley, in certain countries people will look at that say: “I want to do everything I can to get that car.” There is that ambition. In France you would say: “Look at this idiot, how on earth did he manage to pay for that car.” That is France’s problem.

I cannot explain it. Because France is a fabulous country in terms of history, in terms of geography, historical monuments, but French people… it is a shame that there are so many of them in France.”

On fears…

“I am not scared of anything. Not even death. If I died today, I would have had incredible experiences. That I could not even have imagined. So now of course I want to have more experiences, but if things have to stop, then they will stop. I want to enjoy myself. I want to feel good. Live through things.

On his dream job…

For me it is Arsenal. With all the respect that we must have for Arsène Wenger, it will be almost impossible to take his place.
