Four months later, neighbors of a different west side subdivision were horrified when one of their neighborss, a 35-year-old domestic abuse victim, died of a fatal stabbing at her Pandola Avenue home. Her estranged husband then ran outside and used the knife to take his own life. Several horrified neighbor saw the deadly violence unfold.

Here’s a recap of several of Joliet’s most noteworthy crime stories from 2024:

When the Will County Sheriff’s Office announced on Feb. 2 that Joliet mass murder defendant Romeo Nance used a handgun to kill 28-year-old Joliet Township resident Toyosi Bakare and to end his own life in Texas, that was only one part of the story, Joliet Patch has learned.

It turns out 23-year-old Nance used a rifle to slaughter most — though not all — of his seven relatives who lived in two houses in the 2200 block of West Acres Road, on Joliet’s west side near the St. Joe’s hospital campus. A source familiar with the neighborhood told Joliet Patch that Nance used the rifle to kill six family members, and he used a handgun for one of the killings.

Joliet Patch learned that at least one person in the neighborhood saw Romeo Nance running with his rifle in his hand between his family’s two houses that Sunday afternoon, on Jan. 21, and people in the neighborhood did in fact hear multiple gunshots. However, nobody in the neighborhood called and notified the Joliet Police Department about what they saw or heard, the source revealed.
The Joliet family members were buried at Woodlawn Cemetery:

Romeo Nance’s Accomplice Charged With Joliet Township Murder: Sheriff

Jon Hansen, a 24-year-old Shorewood resident with an extensive Will County criminal history, is being charged with first-degree murder for his role in helping now-deceased Joliet mass murder defendant Romeo Nance commit one Joliet Township killing and the non-fatal shooting of another person back in January, the Will County Sheriff’s office said.

According to prosecutors, Hansen said Romeo Nance asked Joliet Township murder victim Toyosi Bakare what he was doing and then shot him. Hansen stated that the other person who got shot on Joliet’s Davis Street was someone random, prosecutors said. He stated that before the shooting they went to 7-Eleven in Shorewood and Romeo told him to get a pair of gloves. According to prosecutors, Hansen said Romeo asked the victim on Davis if he gangbanged and the victim said he didn’t speak English — then Romeo started shooting.

“Jon admitted to holding the gun used for the Davis Street shooting … He claimed to not know what Romeo was doing, didn’t know why they drove to the areas they drove to and essentially blamed Romeo for everything,” prosecutors outlined. “He did admit assuming they were going to slide on some Vice Lords. He admitted to being masked and gloved and knowing he was going to hold a gun. He admitted he had the gun that was used in the Davis shooting and threw it in the river. He identified the river near 7-Eleven where he threw the gun.”

New Trial For Jeremy Boshears In Katie Kearns Murder

Nearly 21 months after a jury of Will County citizens found Jeremy Boshears guilty of first-degree murder and also concealing the homicide of Katie Kearns, a 24-year-old bartender at Woody’s Bar on Joliet’s industrial east side, Will County Judge Dave Carlson overturned Boshears’ convictions and granted him a new trial in January.

Boshears had not been yet sentenced to prison for the November 2017 death of Kearns. Instead, the former Joliet Outlaws motorcycle biker has remained in the Will County Jail, his place of residence since Nov. 18, 2017.

Since the jury verdict was announced on May 2, 2022, Boshears and his lawyer Chuck Bretz made several post-conviction appearances and filings in front of Judge Carlson, as part of their effort to convince the judge to overturn the jury’s verdicts.

During the trial, there were several instances where members of the Will County State’s Attorney were scolded by the judge because they made statements or introduced evidence in the presence of the jury on matters that were supposed to be off-limits for the murder trial. The biggest errors, the judge noted, concerned a previous written order issued by Judge Vincent Cornelius prohibiting the lawyers from using the term “suicide” during the Boshears trial concerning the death of Kearns. In spite of that order, Assistant State’s Attorney Steven Platek unintentionally violated the order, by using the term suicide on at least two occasions during the Boshears trial.

Joliet Man Killed In The Birches Parking Lot: Police

The Joliet Police Department announced in May that several gunshots were fired shortly before midnight, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old ex-prison convict. The shooting happened within walking distance of St. Joe’s hospital, which is where the victim died.

The Will County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Tenzell L. Terry of Joliet. Four years ago, in April 2020, Joliet Patch reported that Terry and 20-year-old Lockport resident Jhakiren Pickens were both charged with home invasion and criminal trespassing in connection with a third-floor apartment building shooting of four people on Joliet’s far east side.

Joliet police recovered about 20 shell casings from the gunfire exchanged inside the apartment.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said that at 11:47 p.m. officers responded to the 2300 block of White Birch Lane for multiple reports of shots being fired in the area. White Birch Lane is the location of a large apartment complex off Glenwood Avenue.

Officers discovered an unresponsive 25-year-old man, later identified as Terry, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of a nearby apartment building. Officers rendered medical aid to Terry until arrival of Joliet Fire Department paramedics.

Terry’s slaying remains unsolved as 2024 draws to a close.

Joliet Murder-Suicide As Woman Stabbed, Man Takes Own Life: English

In May, a 35-year-old woman from Joliet was killed with a kitchen knife, and then her killer took his own life by stabbing himself. The married couple’s 3-year-old child was inside the home and was unharmed. The murder-suicide happened around 11 a.m., according to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English. Will County’s Coroner Laurie Summers identified the victim by her married name of Melissa S. Aud-Headlee; the murder victim was previously known by her name of Melissa Ronczkowski.

As for the killer, he was identified by the coroner as Michael Aud-Headlee of Carmi, Illinois.

English said at 11:10 a.m., Joliet police went to the 3400 block of Pandola Avenue, near the intersection of Timberline Drive, for a woman being stabbed while in the street. Officers discovered a 35-year-old woman lying in the street with multiple stab wounds to her chest, English said. Officers then found a 32-year-old man lying on the ground in a nearby driveway, also with multiple stab wounds to his chest.

Officers learned the man was the woman’s estranged husband, and they were in the process of a divorce, according to police.

Joliet Killer Taken Off The Street, John Hernandez Captured: Police

In mid-June, a young Joliet man with a long arrest record, John “Johnny” Hernandez of the 500 block of Campbell Street, was arrested on first-degree murder charges in connection with the June 1 deadly shooting inside the living room of a house in the 400 block of Krakar Avenue. The shooting killed one man and injured two others.

Joliet police sergeant Dwayne English made the announcement on Father’s Day. English said that during an extensive investigation into the June 1 shooting, Joliet detectives identified Hernandez as a suspect involved in the shooting, which resulted in the death of 23-year-old Fernando Contreras, and gunshot injuries to two other men, ages 20 and 27.

Dad Abused Boy Accused Of Killing Little Brother In Joliet: Complaint

In September, Joliet Patch broke the news that the same Joliet 6-year-old boy who is accused of fatally stabbing his 2-year-old brother with a kitchen knife in the family room was also the victim of a violent attack orchestrated by the 6-year-old’s father, Eric Sutphin, pending felony charges at the Will County Courthouse show.

Sutphin, who lives in Aurora these days, was arrested by Joliet police on May 20, 2022, on charges of aggravated battery and domestic battery. The criminal complaint from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office indicates that Sutphin struck his young son multiple times about the body.

Sutphin is now 36 years old. The mother of last week’s deadly stabbing victim, Christopher Urbina, 2, is also the mother of the 6-year-old boy now accused of killing her youngest child. Sutphin is not the father of the child who died in the stabbing.

SAFE-T-Act Ruling For Woman Who Killed AB Gustos Bar Patrons: Judge

In September, Mary Mosqueda became one of the city’s highest profile arrests for the Joliet Police Department when officers took her away in handcuffs, a month after the Crest Hill Police Department charged her with two counts of failure to report a motor vehicle accident resulting in death. After spending the past few days in the Will County Jail, the Joliet woman had her first court appearance related to the SAFE-T-Act.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office of Jim Glasgow convinced Will County Judge Vincent Cornelius in Courtroom 404 that Mosqueda must remain locked away from society as her felony case unfolds.

According to Will County prosecutor Tricia McKenna:

On March 9, at 10:58 p.m.. the two victims, Danny Cooper, age 68, and wife, Laurie Cooper, age 53, were crossing Plainfield Road from AB Gustos Bar at 2115 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill. “This incident is captured on video,” McKenna wrote.

A vehicle heading eastbound on Plainfield Road strikes both of them, causing the vehicle to visibly jump. The Coopers are left in the road, and the vehicle that struck them left the area. Both victims died of their injuries.

Joliet Murder Defendant Threw His Clothes Into Lake Michigan: JPD

Several people were inside a house on Joliet’s east side the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 5 when 42-year-old Everett Cole suffered multiple gunshot wounds before collapsing and dying in the front entrance of 830 Wenberg St. near the foyer, prosecutors said.

Details on how the Joliet Police Department solved the homicide were outlined in court documents filed at the Will County Courthouse. Prosecutor Tricia McKenna submitted her petition to deny pretrial release for the first-degree murder defendant, 21-year-old Chicago resident Kendrick Pullen.

McKenna’s petition states that at 3:49 p.m. Oct. 5, Joliet police responded to shots fired and found Cole face up in the front entrance of the house on Wenberg Street. Cole had one gunshot to his chest and another to his stomach, according to prosecutors, and was not conscious or breathing. The Joliet Fire Department ambulance rushed Cole to Silver Cross Hospital, where he died.

A witness told Joliet police he heard four to five gunshots coming from the house and saw a white man enter the driver’s seat of a gray Kia Forte. Another told officers they saw four people run from the house and try to get into the gray Kia. However, everyone abandoned the car and ran southbound along Cass Street because the car did not start, that witness surmised, according to the petition.

Jacoby Hamilton Taken Into Custody At Will County Jail

Four days after Joliet Patch broke the news that 19-year-old Crest Hill motorist Jacoby Hamilton was being sued by the city of Joliet for causing a February wreck that ended the lives of a husband and wife, Hamilton was taken into custody in March.

Hamilton kept skipping out on his Will County Courthouse hearings, twice this month, including one of his felony gun arrests by the Joliet Police Department from September 2023, Joliet Patch revealed. In May, Patch reported that Jacoby Hamilton, the 19-year-old Crest Hill motorist, was traveling 66 mph in a 35-mph speed limit zone in the middle of the night without his headlights in use, according to the Joliet police investigation into the Feb. 18 traffic fatality deaths of a Joliet married couple Walter Kretzler, 65, and Roxane Holt, 59.

Because of Hamilton’s history of dangerous driving and his repeated pattern of skipping out on his unrelated traffic citations and criminal charges at the Will County Courthouse, the four-count reckless homicide defendant must now remain in Will County’s Jail for an indefinite period of time under the Illinois SAFE-T-Act, Will County Judge Fred Harvey determined.

Hamilton meets the dangerous standard under the SAFE-T-Act, and he meets the willful flight standard, the judge noted.

21 Mugshots Released By Joliet Police In Operation Streetsweeper

Several of the Joliet area’s most wanted criminal defendants were rounded up by the Joliet Police Department during the past 24 hours as part of a no-nonsense initiative involving Police Chief Bill Evans and Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow called Operation Streetsweeper.

Here are some of the police chief’s prepared remarks he gave at the September press conference, which was carried live by Joliet Patch.

“I am pleased to report that Operation Streetsweeper has resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals for a wide range of offenses such as aggravated battery with a firearm, narcotics delivery, burglary, felony theft, and felony retail theft, among other felony offenses. Many, if not all, of those arrested are repeat offenders who have continued to pose a threat to our community,” Chief Evans said. “By removing these dangerous individuals from our streets, we are taking significant steps to reduce the risk to our community and restore a sense of security to our neighborhoods.”

Latest Eden’s Bar Shooting: Joliet Police Arrest Felon From Clublands

In October, Patch reported that the Joliet Police Department has solved another shooting, and this one involved three people who were shot inside an east side of Joliet bar that has been the site of multiple shootings over the years.

Joliet police announced that a 33-year-old resident from the Clublands Subdivision in the Plainfield area, Keenan Watt, was captured, and he’s now at the Will County Jail charged with three counts of aggravated battery, armed habitual criminal and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon.
