LA GRANGE, IL – The diverse residential neighborhood in La Grange’s northeastern corner is often called the “east side.”

At Monday’s Village Board meeting, Bessie Boyd, a longtime resident in the neighborhood, asked local leaders what was officially considered the east side.

Village President Mark Kuchler said the village didn’t have a “precise” definition for the neighborhood or others.

“I know for years that the board has tried to say we’re one La Grange,” he said.

During the meeting, Kuchler referred to the neighborhood as the “historical east side.”

Boyd said she had heard disturbing comments about the section of town.

“As a Realtor, I have heard in my own ears, ‘Be careful how far east you go off of La Grange Road,'” she said. “That really bothers me, and I think it should bother everyone in this room.”

Kuchler agreed that it should bother everyone.

“That’s what we want to move away from,” he said.

On Monday, La Grange trustees backed off from a proposal to change the zoning in the neighborhood in question. That was after residents’ opposition.
