GLENVIEW, IL — When you think of students collaborating, it typically involves kids of the same grade, but two local school groups of very different ages recently helped change that perception. Students taking a fashion class at Glenbrook North High School partnered up with kindergartners from Willowbrook School in Glenview for the “Monster Project.”

“This was such a fun experience for everyone involved,” Stefanie Basford, GBN fashion studio teacher, tells Patch.

For the project, the younger students from Rachel Baschnagel’s class at Willowbrook worked with their teacher to come up with what a monster would look like. After then sharing the ideas with the fashion class, the high school students got to work in their studio to create a customized, stuffed creature for each student.

“I loved the dynamic of collaborating with young kindergartners because you get to learn more about them,” GBN senior Addison Shenfeld said. “We got to see how excited they were when they received their monster, and it made me feel super accomplished with all the work I put into making their monster extra special.”

Basford said traditionally, her students have worked with Glenbrook North Preschool on the project, but because she had two fashion design studio classes this fall, she needed another class to work with.

“Our kindergartners had a truly special experience being part of this creative process,” Baschnagel said. “Seeing their imaginations come to life is something they will cherish for years to come.”

Basford said in the spring, her class does a “Tooth Fairy Pillow Project,” which she describes as similar to the “Monster Project.” For that one, the GBN students work with a kindergarten class at Hickory Point Elementary in Northbrook.

“Since my first year teaching the fashion classes at GBN, I have been working on this project and have had such a wonderful time with it,” Basford said. “I am always excited about projects where my students do something for others, and this is the perfect capstone project for our hand sewing unit in Fashion Design Studio 1.”

Basford said she would “love” to do this project again and hopefully collaborate with Willowbrook in the future.
