Shubman Gill smashed his third century in four innings as Gujarat Titans swatted aside Mumbai Indians on Friday and set up an Indian Premier League final against Chennai Super Kings.

Gill clobbered 10 sixes and seven fours in a breathtaking 129 off 60 balls.

The opener also took his run tally to 851 runs and is leading the Orange Cap race by a distance. Gill has scored at an average of 60.78 and strike rate of 156.43. And this was his third century in his last four innings.

After the first innings, when he was handed the cap , the opener told the broadcasters: “Actually I went to the washroom to set my hair and didn’t think that I will be wearing this[On wearing the orange cap].”

Gill completed his half century off 32 balls. He hit three sixes in an over off fast bowler Akash Madhwal, who returned 5-5 in his last game to knock out Lucknow Super Giants.

“The over (in which) I hit three sixes is where I felt it was my day,” Gill said after receiving the his Player-of-the-Match performance.

Gill also acknowledges that it was his best innings in the IPL so far.

“I wanted to maximize scoring. Belief is more important. (It) helps when you’re coming off a good international season. This is my best innings so far in the IPL.”

Gill also explained the couple of things that he has worked on during his injury phase.

“Last year, from the West Indies tour, that’s when I shifted gears. I got injured in 2021 leading up to the IPL and I was out for a couple of months.

“That’s when I started realising the areas to work on and made some technical changes in my batting around December, when I was called up for the New Zealand series just after the T20 World Cup.”

Shubman Gill became the youngest batter to notch a century in IPL playoffs as goes past Murali Vijay who did it for CSK in 2012.

Shubman has hit 33 sixes this year, joint-second-highest with Shivam Dube and only behind Faf du Plessis’ 36.

“Six-hitting is not a conscious decision. Obviously, you keep practicing, you want to keep growing, want to keep evolving as a batsman,” he said.
