JOLIET — If you saw Joliet police cars swarming the parking lot of the Walmart store on West Jefferson Street on Sunday night, that was because officers were involved in the arrest of a 39-year-old Mokena woman, Sarah Doty.

Joliet police say Doty was arrested and released on a notice to appear on charges of retail theft and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. But because Doty already faced ongoing criminal charges, she was not let go. The officers brought her to the Will County Jail because of her outstanding Will County arrest warrant and she’s now in the county lockup.

This marks her fourth time in the Will County Jail since August 2022, the logs show.

The following events played out on Sunday night, according to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English:

At 9:36 p.m., the officers responded to the Walmart at 2424 West Jefferson Street for a retail theft. As the officers arrived, they say Doty ran from the store with over $100 in merchandise concealed in her purse that she did not pay for before exiting the store.

Officers found Doty hiding under a vehicle in the parking lot. When the officers tried to place Doty into custody, she pulled both arms away. Doty was then secured into handcuffs following a brief struggle. Officers determined that Doty held an active Will County arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on a previous retail theft charge.
