Boxing legend Mary Kom wants to represent India one last time before she has to retire in November due to the upper age limit for taking part in amateur events, as per TOI.
She will turn 40 in November and cannot take part in events like the Paris Olympics in 2024. She is aiming for the Hangzhou Asian Games in September-October. Mary is looking at a national comeback in April. She last represented India at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Mary is recovering from an ACL injury sustained during the Birmingham CWG trials in June 2022.
“I want to play for India before I am forced to retire. I am recovering well from my ACL injury and I am eyeing a comeback at the Asian Games. Hopefully, I will be fit,” she said at while talking to the media.
Mary is also not part of the national camp and has not boxed for nearly 10 months. Should she make the cut, she will need to undergo the new ‘evaluation test’ process a face-off vs Nikhat Zareen or Nitu Ghanghas to book a place in the 51kg division. So it is possible that the India Open in July will be Mary’s last hurrah.
