GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ — Two people were killed amid an intentional fire Monday evening at a motel in Gloucester City, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. The arson suspect, identified as a person of interest in the homicides, is also now dead, authorities said Friday.

Detectives continue to investigate the fatal shootings, which occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Monday in a motel at 1200 Route 130, prosecutors said. Officers found a dead woman and man — identified as Tabitha Price, 56, of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Steven Smith, 52, of Atco — in a motel room, according to law enforcement.

Firefighters also extinguished a blaze in a separate motel room.

On Wednesday, authorities identified Vaughn Perkins as the individual who caused the fire and as a person of interest in the fatal shootings. Perkins, 53, of Philadelphia is now dead, prosecutors said Friday.

Authorities didn’t immediately disclose when or how Perkins died. He had been charged with second-degree aggravated arson.
