Legendary wrestling broadcaster Jim Ross is the latest to weigh in on Tuesday night’s episode of Talking Smack on the WWE Network, and specifically The Miz’s rant directed at Daniel Bryan. Ross feels that the “aggressively delivered” promo came from the heart, and not from memory. Ross said The Miz “kicked some verbal ass” on Tuesday night, and hopes that he sees more of that “authentic passion” from the Intercontinental Champion in the future.
On Talking Smack, Daniel Bryan criticized The Miz’ in-ring style, which prompted The Miz to go off on a tirade and challenged Bryan to step back into the ring outside of WWE. The Miz pointed out that Bryan was forced into retirement due to injuries, and said that in contrast he has never been seriously injured in his career.
“Miz’ promo represented his best work IMO in a long while as he seemingly expressed himself from his heart and not from his memory,” Ross wrote. “Few wrestlers in today’s marketplace are truly accomplished in being able to have a quick turnaround upon once receiving their promo copy, memorizing it, and then being able to deliver the copy in a real, authentic manner when it counts, and that’s on live, TV. The “I’m Not Working You” feel of any pro wrestling promo always resonates infinitely more than does a memorized promo that sounds as if it is being recited from pure memory without true, motion behind it.”
The WWE Hall of Famer feels that other promotions should take note of the Talking Smack segment and the attention it garnered on social networks.
“All promotions should consider putting more confidence in their own talents to let them create a large portion of their own promos but with the help of a producer who also realizes that less is truly more when it comes to the heavily scripting of promos and inadvertently producing the personality out of these verbal adventures,” Ross wrote.
Ross’ final note on cutting promos was that he prefers wrestlers to be themselves, and prioritize delivery and sincerity above “working” the crowd. You can read J.R.’s entire blog entry here.
