The two were competing to represent Pennsylvania’s 1st District, which was created after a February state Supreme Court decision on redistricting. The new 1st district encompasses most of the former 8th District, which Fitzpatrick previously represented.

The eastern Pennsylvania district covers the majority of Bucks County and some of Montgomery County, just north of Philadelphia. It is largely urban.
