Day 1 Recap

Brance Simms (133) and Joe Brewster (165) both advanced, but took different paths to day two.

Simms opened the day with a first-round loss to Chasen Tolbert (Utah Valley) by 12-2 major decision. Simms rallied, however, winning three-straight matches by decision. Frist, he knocked off Charles Costanzo (Army) 6-2, the most points scored by either Simms or his opponent during the streak. Next, he edged Esteban Gomez-Rivera (American) 3-1. Simms completed his day by topping Western Wrestling Conference foe Kasey Garnhart (Wyoming) 4-1.

Simms faces Joshua Rodriguez (North Dakota State) in the consolation bracket.

Brewster advanced in conventional fashion, scoring two-straight decisions in the championship bracket. Brewster beat Alex Elder (Oregon State) by a single point, 4-3. In the second round, he needed an extra period to score a 3-1 win versus Isaiah Jimenez (San Francisco State).

Brewster faces Caleb Marsh (Kent State) in the consolation bracket.

Dustin Walraven (149) and Cody Pack (157) were both first-round winners, but dropped matches to ranked opponents in the second round.

“Overall, I am a bit disappointed with what went on today,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We still have a lot of work to do. We have a chance to place two guys tomorrow, which is exciting, but we had a couple injuries and did not weigh in one guy. I am pleased with the effort and the fight, but it is time to start posting some results. Hopefully tomorrow we can get two guys to place and finish the tournament strong.”
