MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team will start Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action this weekend as it travels to Augustana University on Friday for a 7 p.m., dual, before hosting U-Mary on Saturday at 3 p.m., in the PE Gym.

CATCHING UP WITH THE MUSTANGS — The Mustangs will enter the weekend with a 4-6 overall record after recording a 1-3 record at the Midwest Duals last weekend. SMSU is ranked 14th in the DII Wrestling Coaches’ Poll—Super Region III. Cole Wilson is the lone Mustang ranked fourth at 285 pounds.

AUGUSTANA — The Vikings will enter Friday’s dual 12-2 overall, 1-0 in loop play and carrying a five bout win streak. Augustana is ranked eighth in the DII Wrestling Coaches’ Poll—Super Region III and has a pair of wrestlers ranked. Aero Amo is ranked first in the region at 184 pounds, while Michael Lowman is ranked third at 285 pounds. Amo is also ranked fourth in the national poll. The Vikings opened up conference action against Northern State with a 31-12 win on Jan. 8, before going 4-0 at the Ranger Duals last weekend.

AUGUSTANA HISTORY — Southwest Minnesota State will meet with Augustana for the 31st time in a series dating back to 1982-83. Augustana leads the series 25-5 and holds a 12-2 advantage in duals in the PE Gym. SMSU suffered a 38-6 loss a season ago, but recorded its last win in the series in the 2013-14 season with a 15-14 victory at Augustana. SMSU’s last home victory against the Vikings was a 22-20 win back in the 1994-95 season.

U-MARY — The Marauders will enter Saturday’s dual 5-8 overall, 1-2 NSIC as they finished last weekend 2-2 at the Midwest Duals. U-Mary started loop play with a loss to Upper Iowa and Minnesota State, before defeating Minot State. U-Mary is ranked 10th in the DII Wrestling Coaches’ Poll – Super Region III. Rudy Guillen is the lone Marauder ranked fourth at 141 pounds.

U-MARY HISTORY — Southwest Minnesota State will meet with seventh time in the series dating back to 2007-08. SMSU leads the series 6-1 and holds a 3-1 advantage in duals in the PE Gym. SMSU recorded a 28-15 victory a season ago in Bismarck and won its last home dual in the 2013-14 season with a 44-2 win. SMSU’s lone-home loss was a 21-16 defeat in the first match of the series in the 2007-08 season.

STREAKS — Senior Cole Wilson, who is ranked fourth in the region at 285 pounds, and Kyle Begin both recorded a 4-0 record at the Midwest Duals last weekend. Wilson will enter the weekend on a six-bout winning streak, while Begin will enter the weekend on a four-bout win streak.
