TEMPE, Ariz. – Twelfth-ranked Arizona State won the final five matches and went on to defeat No. 16 South Dakota State, 25-13, in a college wrestling dual Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils improved to 2-2 in duals this season, while SDSU dropped to 0-2. Both of the Jackrabbits’ losses have come against ranked opponents.
The Jackrabbits held the lead for most of the first half of the dual, starting with an 18-3 technical fall victory by seventh-ranked Nate Rotert. In his first dual action of the season, Rotert led 8-1 at the end of the first period in his match against Cade Belshay before finishing off his victory midway through the third.
Arizona State took a momentary 7-5 lead with back-to-back wins by ranked wrestlers Tanner Hall and Ryan Millhof. Hall, the fourth-ranked heavyweight, posted a 15-3 major decision over Alex Macki, while sixth-ranked Millhof scored a 5-2 decision over SDSU freshman Connor Brown at 125 pounds.
SDSU regained the lead at 10-7 with its second win by technical fall. Top-ranked Seth Gross led Ali Naser 2-0 after the first period of their 133-pound bout before Gross put together a big second period with an escape, takedown and two four-point near-falls en route to a 19-1 victory.
The Jackrabbits closed the first half of the dual with a 9-4 decision by Henry Pohlmeyer at 141 pounds that upped the SDSU lead to 13-7.
Arizona State dominated the second half of the dual behind four consecutive wins from ranked wrestlers. No. 13 Josh Maruca started the winning streak with a 12-6 decision over Colten Carlson and the Sun Devils knotted the dual at 13 with a 4-0 decision by No. 5 Josh Shields over No. 11 Luke Zilverberg.
ASU grabbed the lead for good in the 165-pound weight class as No. 8 Anthony Valencia recorded a 10-1 major decision over Zach Carlson. The Sun Devils then sealed the dual win as No. 1 Zahid Valencia notched a 21-6 technical fall win over 10th-ranked David Kocer in the second period of their 174-pound matchup.

Kordell Norfleet capped the ASU comeback with an 8-6 decision over Brady Ayers in which he recorded a takedown with 20 seconds remaining to break a 6-all deadlock.
UP NEXT
SDSU returns to dual action next Sunday (Dec. 3), when it travels to Spearfish for the Dakota Showcase. The Jackrabbits will square off against Dakota Wesleyan, Northern State and Augustana in the day-long quadrangular at Spearfish High School.
