It’s no secret to any of her fans that Demi Lovato likes to get up close and personal with her demons in her song lyrics, so of course her latest single “Sober” is no exception.
But the singer—who has battled addiction very publicly through the years—revealed through her music that she has relapsed after six years and is no longer sober.

“Mama, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore/And Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor,” she belts in the chorus. “To the ones who never left me/We’ve been down this road before/I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”
Lovato captioned the corresponding videos with “My truth…” Both the lyrics and even the mere existence of a new song come as a shock to fans, many of whom didn’t see this news coming. It’s easy to see why: Just this year, Lovato spoke out about how she felt she’d overcome her addiction to alcohol completely.
“I feel like I’ve conquered my addiction and alcoholism in a way I don’t think about it anymore,” she told Dr. Phil.

Still though, she’s kept honest about her struggles. In an InStyle cover interview this year, she spoke to us about avoiding triggers that come in the form of TV shows like Narcos and Breaking Bad. “Weed doesn’t bother me, but if I see coke or pills or even needles, it just puts them in my brain, and I don’t need to see that.”
Later in a verse of her new song, Lovato promises to get help. If this song is truly as autobiographical as many of her others, fans should rest easy and trust that she does.
