Cairo: The Yemeni government announced on Monday that its forces are abiding by a ceasefire in the south of the country after clashes with Southern Transitional Council forces seeking self-rule for the territory from the north.

###

Yemeni Defence Minister Mohammad Al Maqdashi has ordered government troops in the southern provinces of Aden, Abyan and Shabwa to cease fire, Information Minister Moammar Al Eryani tweeted.

###

He added that the move comes in response to a call from an Arab alliance co-led by the UAE and Saudi Arabia fighting Yemen’s Iran-allied Al Houthi militants.

###

The coalition announced late Sunday the creation of a UAE-Saudi committee to oversee the ceasefire in southern Yemen.

###

Earlier this month, Yemeni STC forces overran the southern city of Aden, the seat of the government. They later attempted to control state institutions in Abyan and Shabwa amid UAE-Saudi efforts to restore stability in the south and refocus attention on the campaign against Al Houthis, who wrested control of the Yemeni capital in late 2014.
